Standing before more than 1,500 coders, web developers and technology managers, Dr. Cook and Dr. Woods introduce the SNAFUcatchers consortium and discuss mental models of complex systems. Click on the image to watch the video.
https://afterpaycasino.com came to mind while reading about the mental models of complex systems, since the keynote's point about how operators build simplified pictures of intricate systems applies far beyond coding. The reminder that those models inevitably drift from reality stuck with me, because I've seen the same thing happen in scheduling and logistics where assumptions quietly go stale. It makes me wonder how often teams actually stop to compare their mental map against what the system is really doing.
